‘Belonging‘ highlights the influential work of Victor Sloan, one of Ireland’s most celebrated visual artists, known for his poignant explorations of identity and conflict during the Troubles in Northern Ireland. Spanning iconic series such as ‘The Walk’, ‘The Platform’ and ‘the Field’, ‘The Birches’, ‘Craigavon’, ‘Sham Fight’, ‘Explosion’, ‘Vietnamese Boat People’, and ‘Circus, Portadown‘, this exhibition captures the intensity of the 1980s and 1990s—a period marked by profound social and political upheaval.

Sloan’s innovative techniques, including his distinctive use of dyes, inks, and paint on negatives and prints, create powerful images that blend documentary and conceptual perspectives. His work not only documents a landscape marked by conflict but also interrogates the deep-seated questions of identity and belonging. Exhibited worldwide and included in prestigious collections, Sloan’s legacy has left an indelible mark on Irish visual art, positioning him as a pioneering voice who transforms photography into a medium of personal and political expression.
