Opening Exhibition: Saturday 17th January at 2pm

Display Dates: Saturday 17th January – Friday 20th March

We have worked with Pullitzer Prize Winning Photographer Cathal MacNaughton to produce the exhibition Overloaded – which tells the story of haemochromatosis. Known for his evocative work documenting global humanitarian and social issues MacNaughton was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Feature Photography in 2018 for his coverage of the Rohingya refugee crisis, offering a powerful visual narrative of their suffering and resilience.   In Autumn 2024, the Haemochromatosis UK brought together 21 volunteers with genetic haemochromatosis (GH) at photo-shoots in Belfast & Derry-Londonderry in Northern Ireland.

The exhibition features stories and images from people like Abigail, diagnosed with haemochromatosis aged just 14. Telling her story she says: “Everything I do feels like I’m wading through really thick mud. It’s sore, it’s heavy, it’s hard. It can be quite dark at times, because I look at people my age doing things that I would love to be doing. I’ve always said that this is not an old person’s condition; I am proof in front of you that it’s not.” Or Deborah who says: “I felt totally dismissed because I’m a woman of a certain age and I work in what people consider to be a high stress environment.”

The Exhibition is to be shown first at the Edinburgh Photographic Society during the Edinburgh Fringe. Muriel Binnie – Chair of the EPS said of the exhibition photos: “we were happy to be involved with this exhibition by an award-winning, world-class photographer; showing an innovative use of photography; and for a very worthwhile cause. You can all see the stunning body of work on the walls and to Cathal, our humble congratulations on a wonderful project, beautifully executed.”
